Heidelberg Laureate Forum

The Heidelberg Laureate Forum provides an opportunity for young researchers to spend a week with winners of the Turing Award, Abel Prize, Nevanlinna Prize, and Fields Medal. Applications are due by February 14, 2017.

  1. prof. sachin tendulkar says:

I would like to share my experience with the Heidelberg Laureate Forum.

I am a professor at a university, and I have had a student selected for this in the past.
I was misled (and I know other professors were also misled) by the advertisement in previous years that suggested that the travel will be covered for all students whose advisors do not have enough funds to cover the travel. In fact, the decision about travel funds is outsourced to some “academic consultancy” corporation, who I believe is grossly unqualified to make such decisions.

Unless I am swimming in excess grant money, it makes no sense whatsoever (and cannot be justified for any research grant) to spend 2500$ to send a student to listen to a few general-interest talks.

I think this is a waste of energy and effort, to both organize this event, and to undergo this massive nomination/application process for “laureates”. The money would be better spent having the same speakers give talks at the Heidelberg university and uploading good quality recording of these talks to youtube.
